BACKGROUND
Kestrel comes from a generational line of Holy Gardeners and farmers from Fallstone, Clan Flynn.
This family is large, with as many branches as an oak tree, and is well-dispersed along the Faded Steppe and regions nearby. Not every clan member is a Flynn, but every Flynn loves nature and takes the duties of protecting and caring for nature very seriously.
Well, almost every Flynn.Kestrel's side of the clan tree has a cute little rule of naming descendants after woodland animals. She and her siblings are the generation of birds, hence her name. She has two older brothers named Hawk and Crane, and a younger sister named Robin.Like all young Flynns, Kestrel was raised to the expectation of following in the footsteps of those who walked nature's path before her. But that didn't mean she willingly conformed to her family's standard the entire time. Sneaking out of lessons, hiding from elders, and running as far out into the plains as she can, she avoided the responsibility that her siblings, cousins, second cousins etc. all took on to become guardians of the land. She settled to be a regular ol' farmer, and her parents eventually accepted it. At least she still appreciates the work of nature.Seasons in and out, Kestrel kept up the light footwork that once aided her escapes from Holy Gardener lessons, enjoying the air and wind against her body as she ran long distances, just to feel the speed. As though she had the wings of her namesake in her heart. Then the young woman's life ceased to be peaceful and plain, as word swept through Fallstone upon a seasonal wind. The Arsa Sidhe that claimed the lands south of The Wall have mysteriously vanished.
Clan Flynn elders joined the hasted gathering at Stonebrook and offered the entire clan's talent to the mayors, suggesting some members to go to the Southern Reach and investigate the situation, conduct research on the flora and fauna there, and maintain the balance of nature there if needed, in the absence of the Reach's original inhabitants.
Many members volunteered and travelled in groups on their own time, and it took a while for Kestrel to come up in conversation amongst the elders. She was a controversial topic, certainly, but in the end the clan decided she was to follow her peers down to the settlement there, as one last attempt to change her mind about becoming a Holy Gardener, or at least to try.Of course, Kestrel resented this decision made on her behalf, but this time there was no running available to her. Her things were already packed before she was told, and her fee for the wagon trip was paid in advance. She couldn't wriggle out of this one, and so she begrudgingly took the journey down...
